Silvery Scales

This kind of collage is fun and easy to do with kids. I had the idea for this collage when my little artist was excited to learn to use the scissors but got unhappy if he did not manage to follow the drawn line. With the scales of the fish, I convinced him that they don't have to all precise, for they are all different shapes in real life, too.

When we started this, we saved all blue and silvery shades of paper scraps, from Christmas chocolates and whatnot for a few weeks. Then we had plenty to start cutting! A few pieces are in red and other warm colours to make it more lively.

Cut a fish shape and do the fins and tails first. Paint with silver colour or cover with paper of your choice. Then glue on the scales starting from the tail!

This is my participation in this week's Collage Obsession Challenge where the theme was Fish.

Kala hopeakylki

Osallistun tällä viikon Collage Obsession -haasteeseen, aiheena tietysti Kalat.

Travel Journal for a Friend

A new blank notebook is something I'm always excited to have, and it makes a really nice gift especially if you decorate the covers yourself. Collaged journal covers are fun and easy to make. You can use anything, from scrapbooking paper to real life ephemera!

Glue it well and seal with acrylic medium to protect that the pieces stay put. Acrylic medium makes the colours in some papers bleed, though, so you may want to test first. Inkjet printer colours, for example, are prone to that.

You could choose the colours from the recipient's favourites or pick a theme that suits her/his interests and the occasion. This journal from last winter was my gift for a friend who was leaving for a road trip.

Kirjankannet kollaasitekniikalla

Testaa varoen esimerkiksi kodin valokuvaprintterillä tulostettuja kuvia, sillä laitteesi on todennäköisesti mustesuihkukirjoitin!

Hand Art

Do you remember, as a child, tracing your hands on paper and then coloring and cutting them out? This seems quite popular, as are all kinds of little keepsakes with children's handprints. Why are we so attracted to hand art, I wondered. With children, it's probably because handprints are such concrete memories of that particular moment. But we grown ups can enjoy leaving our handprints, too, so why not try hand art! These are also being traded like ATCs.

The background for both hands is napkins glued with white gesso, and the Christmas hand has some more layers of paper scraps and stenciling. I got myself the embossing heat tool for Christmas, and used that on the poinsettia. Young Frida Kahlo has a background of one single napkin that looks like patchwork, and frames made of a rub-on.

Molempien käsien taustakerroksena on gesson päälle liimattuja servettejä. Frida Kahlon nuoruudenkuvan taustana on tilkkutäkkikuvioista servettiä, josta tuli gessolla aika pastelli kontrastiksi mustavalkokuvalle. Kuvan kehykset on leikattu siirtokuvasta.

Doors

I almost forgot to post my piece for this week's Collage Obsession Challenge, Doors. That probably happened because the journal page did not feel completed at the time I made it, and it still kind of doesn't. With deadline fast approaching, and without an idea of what to add, I thought why not post it anyway! Do you have an idea of what this page might need?
