Embossing Powders with Stencils

Here I wanted to experiment a bit with embossing powders and stencils, inspired by the stencils I bought at last weekend's craft event in Helsinki, Intohimona Skräppäys (meaning Passionate about Scrapbooking in English). There were so many to choose from that it was hard to pick my favourites!

The host of this fabulous event, Askartelu Amalia, also has a monthly challenge blog. These pieces are my submission for April, with the theme of embossing powders.

For the envelope, I used clear embossing powder and white for the card. The pattern is of course almost invisible at this point, so I painted it in different shades of tube watercolours. The stencil I used is called Mini Honeycomb by The Crafter's Workshop.

Kohojauheilua sabluunalla

Tuputin siis embossausmusteen taustalle sabluunan läpi, jolloin kohojauhetta tulee sabluunan aukkokohtiin. Paperinauhan ständiltä ostamani sabluuna on The Crafter's Workshopin Mini Honeycomb.

Kirjekuoressa käytin läpinäkyvää kohojauhetta ja kortissa valkoista. Sitten maalasin kohojauheen päältä tuubivesiväreillä, mikä toi melkein näkymättömän kuvion kivasti näkyviin. Jokohan kohta olisi omenankukkien aika!

Mixed Media Background with Stamp, Stencil & Book Pages

I’m joining two challenges with this layout:

Inkido, where the challenge was to use stenciling and stamping for the background, and Scrap for Help, where book pages were the thing of the month.

This will be a title page for a travel album, so there is no journaling. I printed the photo in black and white to highlight the skyline and the ironwork on the bridge rail.

I also wanted to try making my own embellishments from scratch. I made the book page flower first, starting from this yoghurt foil lid with a pretty flower pattern.

The lid was like this, but a different colour.

I used decorative scissors to cut circles of book pages in different sizes. Then, to accentuate the borders, I coloured them with a pearlescent chalk ink and Promarkers.

I liked the look of the scraps that were left after cutting the circles, so I decided to use these as well. I glued them onto the page and then used similar circles for one more thing: stenciling partial circles. For this, I used first Distress Inks and then acrylic paints for more vivid colours.

The two other flowers I cut from scraps of my mixed media experiments. The puzzle pieces were first gessoed and then painted with acrylics. Lastly, I wrote the year with a white gel pen.

Earth Day Challenge: Use Something Old

At Faber-Castell's Design Memory Craft, creative upcycling was the April challenge in the spirit of Earth Day. I'd had this idea for a while to use safety envelopes as in a patchwork quilt of teacups.

I once saw a quilt like that and loved it in a Kaffe Fassett pattern book, but unfortunately did not write down which book it was in. I came to think that the safety envelopes come in surprisingly many patterns, and they often resemble blue china!

The 8x8 inches canvas was already painted in a previous experiment, so this piece was really quick to make. I drew the teacup pattern and made four different ones. They are glued on the background with acrylic medium and the borders enhanced with PITT Artist Pen Big Brush, which has a practical big brush tip, well, the name says it all!

The challenge host Mou Saha had used safety envies in her work, too. Here's a look at what she did!

Happy Recycling Crafting!

Vanhasta uutta

Faber-Castellin Design Memory Craft -haasteblogissa kuun aiheena oli luoda vanhasta uutta. Kierrätyshaasteita on näkynyt tässä kuussa mukavan paljon, koska 22.4. vietetään Maan päivää (Earth Day).

Collage Obsession: Quirky Torn Paper Faces

Here's my take on this week's challenge, Faces, at Collage Obsession. The idea of Quirky Torn Paper Faces is from a fellow trader at ATCs for All, where she is hosting a swap on this theme. The faces are torn from book pages, maps etc. and the backgrounds are from my various experiments with mixed media.

Kummia kasvoja kirjansivuista

Hassunkuriset kasvot revityistä papereista ovat aiheena ATC-vaihdossa, johon osallistun ATCs for All -sivustolla.

Springtime in Paris

Cities were the theme of the week at Collage Obsession. I had an old calendar of Paris that I chose for the background in these Gothic Arch shaped cards. Second layer is made with beeswax and napkins. I also had an old French textbook from which I took some collage elements for the final layer.

Pariisin kevät

Osallistun tällä viikon Collage Obsession -haasteeseen, jonka aiheena oli Kaupungit. Taustat on leikattu kalenterista, jossa on vanhoja valokuvia Pariisista. Seuraavan kerroksen tein servieteistä ja silkkipapereista mehiläisvahatekniikalla. Päällimmäisen kerroksen palaset ovat enimmäkseen vanhasta ranskan oppikirjasta. Kevätkukkia odotellessa!
