August Light: Layout for Scrap Africa DT

Hello! Here's my layout for the mid-month mood board challenge at Scrap Africa!

And here's what the mood board looks like:

I was inspired by the abundance of flowers and the colours, and also the combination of different typographies in the heart, which suggested using two different sort of alphabet in my title. One word is written by hand and and another with alphabet that I cut from corrugated cardboard.

Another inspiration to my layout was the mood board at Scrap Around the World:

Here I was inspired by the combination of pink and natural colours, the handwriting and the twine. I didn't feel like using dark brown this time, but the dark green handmade paper that I used to mat my photo sort of reminded me of the worn out leather covers of the old book in the mood board.

With this layout, I'm also joining the Archi-Scraps challenge, with the theme of Layers and/or corrugated cardboard!

I had wanted to use corrugated cardboard alphabet since I saw them in a layout by Terhi Koskinen recently. Do check out her work if you haven't already done so, she's one of Finland's best known scrapbookers and for a good reason!

Thanks for your visit! I hope to see you in the Scrap Africa challenge, open for participation until the end of September!

Skräppää samoista materiaaleista 4/4

Hello, and happy Sunday! Today I'm posting part 4 of 4 in Scrap with the Same Materials, a group project organized by Taru Jehkonen. She invited three of her Finnish scrapbooking colleagues to exchange material kits, and now for this whole month we've been Scrapping with the same Materials!

Here's how we worked: Each of us made four identical kits, kept one and mailed one to each of the others. They were all pretty and so different from what I normally choose, so it's been a really fun challenge! Here are the links to what I made from the previous kits: week 1, week 2, week 3 (my own kit) and below are the links to the other three ladies' blogs!

Moi! Tänään on vuorossa neljäs Skräppää samoista materiaaleista -rinkiin tekemistäni leiskoista. Viimeisenä pääsi työstettäväksi Merkun paketti, joka näytti tältä:

Tarun koolle kutsumalla neljän naisen porukalla kokosimme kukin ensin neljä samanlaista tarvikepakettia. Yksi jäi itselle ja kolmelle muulle postitettiin omansa. Näistä on nyt syntynyt neljä leiskaa kultakin tekijältä. Täältä voit kurkata, millaiset sivut tein Tarun, Maikkiksen ja omista kiteistäni. Ja alla olevista linkeistä pääset heidän blogeihinsa ihailemaan jokaisen rinkiläisen tuotoksia!

Taru * * * Maikkis * * * Merkku

What about you, have you ever tried to swap materials with your crafting friends? I really recommend it, it's a lot of fun to get to try different products than what you yourself typically like to buy! Sharing can also save you a bit when many packages have more than you need.

Hyvää sunnuntain jatkoa ja tervetuloa taas parin päivän päästä uuden Scrap Africa -haasteen pariin!

Bye for now, and hopefully see you again in a couple of days for the mid-month Scrap Africa Challenge!

Skräppää kesän muistot! Kurssi Espoossa 19.9. PERUTTU

Hi! Today's blog post is about my workshops in Finland, so I'm writing mainly in Finnish this time. I'll just say shortly that this mini album I made for Fiskarettes Finland was one of my favourite projects of 2014 and I can't believe I forgot to post it at the time. It was really fun and quick to make, too!

Skräppää samoista materiaaleista 3/4

Hi there, and happy Sunday! I'm posting in two languages this time, so please see below a bit for English!

Hei vaan ja kaunista sunnuntaita! Tänään on vuorossa kaksikielinen postaus ja kolmas osa Skräppää samoista materiaaleista -ringin tuotoksia. Tarun koolle kutsumalla porukalla kokosimme kukin ensin neljä samanlaista tarvikepakettia.

Here's my kit for Scrap with the Same Materials, a group project organized by Taru Jehkonen. She invited three Finnish scrapbookers to exchange material kits, and then we'll all be Scrapping with the same Materials!

Each of us made four identical kits, kept one and mailed one to each of the others. It's now week 3 out of 4 and everyone got to work by the kit made by me. I can't wait to see what the other ladies did! You can check out their layouts here:

The making of this layout was inspired by the Creative Gym #11 challenge at Mixed Media Place, which was to choose one of tutorials in Finnabair's Art Recipes series and make your own interpretation with that technique. I chose the Recipe from July, with the theme of Rusted and Rustical.

I started by piecing the background papers together and stenciling some modeling past in opposite corners.

To get a rusty shade, I tried mixing these two mists:

I would also use some of the Pewter and Gold shaded mists later on.

I don't have clear gesso, so I took an acrylic binder instead that is very fluid and easy to spread out. What I didn't like for this project is that it's also very glossy, so I tried to take a bit of the gloss away by mixing it with a little bit of white gesso. This is how the background looked like at this point:

This frame I had painted previously with alcohol inks and it was one of the embellishments I had included in my kit that I sent to the others. Now I wanted to make it look rusty inside, so I put in a piece of paper and took the acrylic binder again!

I put a drop of the liquid acrylic binder in each corner of the frame and then coloured it with my own rust coloured mix of mists. I then added microbeads as much as it looked like the binder could take. The result (that you can see a bit further down) was a happy surprise, as I don't have a lot of experience with either the acrylic binder of this kind or microbeads!

One more thing before I show my layout and that's the sketch I used, from C'est Magnifique Challenge.

Käytin leiskassa C'est Magnifiquen kuukauden luonnosta, joka näyttää tältä:

And finally, here's my layout! / Tässä vihdoin valmis leiska!

And some detailed photos.../ Ja tässä yksityiskohtia.

Last but not least, I wanted to include the story of the Peter Iredale shipwreck that's in my photo. It's located in Oregon, on the West Coast of the U.S. just a few miles of the river Columbia, where it would have sailed onto Portland if it hadn't sailed ashore and gotten stuck in the sand dunes in the October winds of 1906.

The journaling got so long that I decided to attach it onto the backside of the layout this time.

By the way, the use of tea stains for distressing the paper was another Finnabair inspiration - she seems to use tea in her creations a lot! The old typewriter looking font called Erika Ormig is one of my favourites from dafont.com.

Thanks for your visit and hope to see you again next Sunday for the last part in our Scrap the Same Materials series!

Fontti on Dafontista otettu ilmainen lempparini, vanhan kirjoituskoneen jälkeä jäljittelevä Erika Ormig.

Kiva kun kävit ja tervetuloa taas ensi sunnuntaina kurkkaamaan Skräppää samoista materiaaleista -sarjan viimeinen osa!

Happy 2015: Layout for Scrap Africa DT

Hi! Happy weekend, and happy September! I'm a bit late posting my layout for the first Scrap Africa challenge of the month. At the time I finished it I was too busy to do the wise thing and schedule the post, and then our kids fell ill... but now they are safe and sound asleep, so here it goes.

The challenge is this inspiring sketch by Denise van Deventer, the owner of Scrap Africa challenge site.

It was the clock in the sketch that instantly took my thoughts to New Year, thus the choice of my photos, in case you wondered!

With a multi photo sketch you have to print the pictures pretty small, but you can see the fireworks a bit better in the detail photos below!

I wanted the die-cut clock to pop out so I painted it bright pink first and then used clear embossing powder.

For glitters and pearls, I used pearl stickers in purple and gold, rhinestones in light lavender purple and Stickles in bronze colour.

This was the first time I used the delicate chipboards from Wycinanka. I painted the heart pattern chipboards golden and glued them down with Glossy Accents. After that I got the idea to also fill some of the hearts with the bronze coloured Stickles, and I'm really happy I did that!

I bought these glittery purple alpha from American Crafts' Thickers line a few weeks ago in a sale, and was a bit doubtful if I would get to use them at all. I'm often lacking more neutral stuff to use so I wasn't very sure about the glitter nor the purple, but was very attracted to them for some reason still. Now I'm surprised to see that they have found their way to more than one layout already, so it was a good purchase after all! Did you ever shop a weird product that ended up being a favourite in your stash?

Thank you for your visit and see you again on Sunday for part 3/4 of Scrap the Same Materials, the fun and inspiring co-operation project with three of my Finnish scrapping colleagues. Meanwhile, if you haven't stopped by lately, check in the first and second parts, with links to what the other ladies did!
